Introduction
The aim of this essay is to analyse and compare cosmetic brands, which export their products to the Netherlands that are testing on animals and those who are not. It contains a first part about the legal rights in the Netherlands. Secondly, the attention is addressed to the biggest animal foundation (PETA). Lastly, the companies that use or do not use animal testing are clarified as well as the ethical questions of why companies test on animals. To conclude, a recommendation is given on how they can prevent animal tests.
Legal rights in the Netherlands
The right to test on animals or to sell animal tested cosmetics are forbidden in the Netherlands. In fact, it has been forbidden in Europe since 2013. However, a lot of cosmetic companies export their cosmetics outside (of) Europe. Those cosmetics often arrive in China because the legal rights in China do not forbid cosmetic companies to test on animals. In contrast, it is mandatory to test on animals before selling cosmetics on the Chinese market in order to ensure the safety of the products. (International, EU ban on cosmetic testing, 1898)

Biotherm, La roch posay, Maybelline (part of L’oréal group), Bobbi Brown, Clinique and Mac (part of Estee Lauder) state on their website that they are against animal testing and only do it when it is required by law. This means, they do not test on animals but they sell their products on the Chinese market and under Chinese law it is mandatory to test on animals, so these companies let other parties test their products on animals.
