Imagine living in a small box like a mouse with eight other people terrified that you might be caught by a cat. Anne Frank entered this box at the age of thirteen in 1942 in Amsterdam, Holland. She hid there for two years from 1942 to 1944. During this period, the only source of entertainment for Anne was writing in a diary. A red checkered diary given to her by her father for her birthday. Anne Frank was an important figure during World War II because her diary shows us the terror that her and her family had to go through while hiding from the Gestapo.

Anne’s father’s name was Otto Frank. He was a lieutenant in the German army during World War I. He was a businessman in Germany and the Netherlands. Otto Frank’s company was called Opekta. This company made fruit pectin which is a thicking agent for jam and jelly. In 1940 German forces invaded Holland, Jews were not allowed to operate businesses. Otto Frank had to hand over his business to his Dutch coworkers. Anne’s older sister Margo, received a letter demanding that she go to a work camp. Because of the letter in 1942, Otto decided to hide his family in the secret annex above his warehouse in Amsterdam. Otto Frank invited his business partner Hermann van Pels, his wife Augusta and their son Peter later a dentist Fritz Pfeffer joined the group. There were five people that brought them food and supplies that worked in the warehouse. Their names are: Johannes Kleiman, Victor Kugler, Bep Voskuijl and Jan and Miep Gies. In 1933 Miep Gies began working for Otto Frank as his secretary at Opekta. Miep and her husband Jan were close friends to the Frank family. Miep helped the Frank family go into hiding in spring of 1942. Miep continued to work for the company keeping it going. Miep continued to hide them until 1944 when the Gestapo found the family and others in the annex. On August 4, 1944, the Gestapo received information from Dutch informers on the Frank Family whereabouts. All the people in the Annex where sent to Auschwitz
