Doeden explains in this paragraph the other options for spending over 100 billion dollars on the space adventure to Mars. Although this is a massive step in human advancement, there are other problems humans need to take care of before humans abandon Earth. He gives examples that would make more sense in the state of the world today and the economic state of the country. Some of his examples included: paying off some of the national debt, using the money for the furtherment of the educational system, and researching renewable resources. These options would help short term problems more, but could even increase the status of the US over time. In the first paragraph, he mentions the troubles caused by having to start a new food supply on Mars. With Mars being so far away having a reliable source of food only coming in from Earth would not be plausible. He, also, talks about how humans may not yet be prepared for the weather of the red planet and the other cosmic storms. Earth has a magnetic field that protects us from most of these which could cause problems for the galactic settlers. This information will be used to explain the problems of starting a new colony on Mars. These paragraphs will show how even though humankind has the technology to make it to Mars and back, humans might not be ready to survive in such drastic changes.
