When Phaethon said that, Apollo instantly regretted his promise. Apollo regretted it because his dad Zeus couldn't even drive the chariot across the sky and Apollo had a hard time controlling it across the sky. But Phaethon was dead set on driving the chariot across the sky. When Phaethon did start driving the chariot Apollo and Zeus knew it meant death to Phaethon. Zeus was alarmed and knew he had to interfere, or the whole world would perish in flames. Zeus let a lightning bolt hit the chariot and Phaethon ended up falling into the po river, he died.
