From his very first day alive, he has been up on his feet. Whether that's delivering messages to other gods or helping people out in some other way. He wasn’t necessarily known as a god of fertility for humans, but more towards cattle, and herds. He’s been known to some people as, the conductor, patron of travelers and thieves, shepherd of men, leader of soul, and several more. Some names people gave him were, Mercury and Ermis. He got the name Mercury from being a messenger and traveling between worlds. The 4 main things he was recognized by were, a broad brimmed hat, winged sandals, a purse, and herald wand. He was given special powers from heralds, wands, or the golden staff. He was given the golden staff when he was a baby from Apollo, and kept it all throughout his life. One of the things he was able to do with it was bring sleep to people. The wand that was given to him was a symbol of medicine. He was one of 27 siblings in his family. His parents were Zeus and Maia. He had 8 children and one of them was a thief. He had a couple of sacred animals and plants. For animals, they were a tortoise, a ram, and a hawk. Aside from all of that, some myths say that he wasn't just a messenger, that he was also an inventor of speech. As you already learned, he lived on Mount Olympus, but he also lived with the chief gods there. He was also the son of Zeus and Maia, and the daughter of Atlas. There are several other reasons why Hermes is a very interesting person in Greek mythology. The most important thing he did in Greek Mythology, as you already know, was deliver messages to other gods, or people. Another story that was interesting was how he and his stepbrother Apollo fell in love with the same person. Also, the day he was born, part of how he stole the cattle was by an instrument he had made called the lyre.
