Gun Control is Not the Answer Increasing gun control will not decrease crime, but changing the ways in which we punish the crimes will. When you think about crime the first thing that comes to mind is gun control. However, there are already numerous laws on the books that are not being followed. Criminals do not follow the laws and that is the problem. The punishments for crimes do not fit the bill and criminals figure even if they get caught the punishment really is not that bad so they may as well do the crime. Criminals do not get gun or weapons legally in the first place so adding extra gun laws will not prevent criminals from obtaining weapons. Gun laws prevent normal citizens from protect themselves and their families. When criminals obtain guns and weapons, they are not getting them from legal channels. Having background checks are good to prevent violent offenders from buying weapons but there again it does not prevent them from getting weapons. It may slow down the process but it does not eliminate the process. With the long wait times for citizens to receive their guns the criminals are receiving their weapons quicker and have an advantage over the law abiding citizens. Gun control laws actually help criminals. The criminals know that citizens have to wait to get their guns. They also know what kind of weapons the people are allowed to have and which they are not. This puts the advantage in the criminals hands. If the criminals know what they are up against they can prepare. The citizens have no idea what to expect from the criminal. Since criminals obtain weapons off the streets there is no telling what they may or may not have. This makes it very dangerous for people and it also makes it hard to protect yourself in an unknown
