The effects of climate change are becoming more and more apparent as the years go by. The topic of climate change is reoccurring presidential debates and other important conversations, shining a light on a very crucial issue we need to find a solution to. Because this is such a complicated topic, there are many perspectives thrown into the pot of solutions. There are some republican politicians that are now responding with “I am not a scientist”, to get away without actually stating an opinion about the issue. By doing this they are implying it is not important enough to be their problem to solve. This coincides with those who do not believe in climate change what so ever. This idea is what drives the politicians who do not feel climate change is worth doing something about. Because these men have so much power and are willing to take on so much more risk, they influence others and stand in the way of doing the right thing, by making changed that will help our earth. “Individuals tend to adopt beliefs that are shared by member of salient-in group, often resisting revision of such beliefs when they are confronted with the contrary information from perceived out-groups.” This quote identifies the group of people that goes along with these politicians’ ideas about climate change being a conspiracy. The power of a social group is large when involving state policies and the policies of our country. In the Cool Dudes article they also explain the thought process of those who are vulnerable to these politicians’ ideas. “Social group membership affects the individual’s information processing, since individuals are motivated by a strong emotional and psychic investment in having their groups beliefs confirmed.” They are willing to take on the risk that does not directly affect their lives at this point in time.
