Radiation and Cancer, is there a link? Shaundra Easley Vatterott College Intro to Radiology Courtney Oetting

It seems now that everything is a link to cancer. However, while some reports have been perplexed, there is one report that seems to have merit. The statistics found states there is a link between radiation and cancer. According to the findings there are three reasonings that support this argument, high levels of ionizing radiation, high beam from radiation cause damage to cancer cells, and lastly it can be linked because of risks of health effects. My first reasoning on radiation and cancer being linked is because high levels of ionizing radiation. According to radiation …show more content…

According to the official Breast Cancer site (breastcancer.org), statistics show that exposing normal cells to cancer treatments, chemotherapy and radiation therapy can cause a new, and different type of cancer to develop many years after the treatment. “Radiation therapy uses a special kind of high-energy beam to damage cancer cells. Over time, radiation damages cells that are in the path of its beam -- normal cells as well as cancer cells.” (Breastcancer.org, 2017) Since cancer cells are less organized than normal cells, cancer cells are more impacted by radiation. Normal cells have an advantage because they are better able to repair themselves and survive the radiation from treatment. According to medicinenet.com, ionizing radiation affects people by depositing energy in the body tissue, which is known to cause cell damage or cell death. In some cases, there may be no effect that happens. In other cases, the cells may survive but is known that it can become abnormal, which is either temporarily or permanently, or an abnormal cell that may become malignant. It is also known that large doses of radiation can cause extensive cellular damage and is detected result in death. It is also known that with smaller doses, the person or organs may survive, but the cells are damaged, and it is increasing the chance of cancer. Another statistic has shown the …show more content…

According to medicinenet.com, statistics show that people are exposed to background levels of radiation in the environment. The primary concern in radiation is that it could increase the risks of cancers and genetic effects that can be harmful to people. It also says that you should note that all the health effects exposure to radiation that can occur in unexposed people due to other causes that happened. And that other detectable differences in appearance between radiation that is induced cancers and genetic effects and others who has occurred other causes. “The probability of a radiation-caused cancer or genetic effect is related to the total amount of radiation accumulated by an individual. Based on current scientific evidence, any exposure to radiation can be harmful (or can increase the risk of cancer).” (Medicinenet.com, 2017) It also states, radiation exposed at very low doses diminishes the estimated increases in risk. In conclusion, these are my three reasoning on why I think radiation and cancer is linked. There are high levels of ionizing radiation. High beams from radiation cause damage to cancer cells, and finally the risks of health effects. These three reasons are mainly a big impact on radiation and cancers being
