Argumentative Essay The play Romeo and Juliet, by Shakespeare, is considered a tragedy. The definition of tragedy is a play dealing with tragic events and having an unhappy ending, especially one concerning the downfall of the main character. During tragedies, many unfortunate events occur. Although there were various tragic events during the play, the most tragic of them was the death of Romeo and Juliet. A tragic event leading to the death of Romeo and Juliet was when Tybalt killed Mercutio, and, in retaliation, Romeo killed Tybalt. Romeo’s first thought was that Tybalt had to die for what he had done. Romeo engaged Tybalt, a skilled swordsman, in a duel. Romeo kills Tybalt, and this enrages the Capulets. After murdering Tybalt in a cold blood, Romeo realizes what he had done. The Prince of Verona thought about having Romeo put to death after hearing the cries of Lady Capulet, “I beg for justice, which thou, prince, must give. Romeo slew Tybalt; Romeo must not live. (Act 3, Scene 1: 179-180)” The prince followed up with the question of who should be blamed and punished for the murders of Tybalt and Mercutio. A Montague responds, “[Romeo’s] fault concludes but what the law should end, The life of Tybalt. For example, if Romeo was killed instead of Tybalt, Juliet would probably kill herself in sorrow. If Romeo waited for justice for Tybalt killing Mercutio, he would probably not be satisfied with the justice unless it meant death. He would attack Tybalt if he was put in a prison or banished, and then Romeo would be killed or banished from Verona. Even if Tybalt was put to death, Romeo would still not get over Mercutio being killed, and he would stay depressed. Romeo would probably depress Juliet, and he would do something stupid when the Capulets are hostile towards him. He would be banished, put in prison, or put to death for this impulsive
