In the late 1700’s, the idea of “publicly funded education” was contributed by John Adams who writes “The whole people must take upon themselves the education of the whole people and must be willing to bear the expense of it” (“Should College Be Free,” 2018). In the year 1862, the Moral Act was passed which allowed land-grant colleges that are created by any state on federal lands, for higher education to be accessed by Americans in any social class (“Should College Be Free,” 2018). In 2013, only 30 percent of the cost of a public four-year college was covered by a Pell Grant, but during the year 1973, 75 percent of cost was covered by Pell Grants (“Should College Be Free,” 2018). Having free public higher education could not only benefit just one individual student in college, it could benefit everyone as a nation. Adults who couldn’t get the chance to have higher education could finally have it. That’s something this nation is in desperate need of due to almost every higher class job requiring a degree in a major. If more Americans had degrees it help the economy grow faster due to more Americans having higher class jobs.

Many more college students would be more happy to know that they are acquiring higher education debt free. There are many positives to students being happy to learn, one being students could pick what major they wanted without the cost. Let's say a student wants to be a Neurosurgeon, but he cannot due to his family making only $90 thousand a year. With this idea for free college that student could reach his full potential and graduate debt free. Another advantage is students who graduate will most likely be happy at their workplace which leads to better decision making
