Should College Tuition be Free?
Imagine if college students did not have to pay for tuition. The idea of “publicly funded education” started way back to the time of the Founding Fathers of America. In the year 1785, John Adams stated: "The whole people must take upon themselves the education of the whole people and must be willing to bear the expense of it" (Trade Schools, Colleges, and Universities Publishers). College tuition should have no cost, because students with lower income would have a better likelihood at getting into college, students would not have to get loans, and students could use that money towards something in their future. Firstly, lower income families would have a better possibility at sending their kids to college.

The expeditious increase of tuition limits access to higher education, which is “essential in today’s workforce: three-quarters of the fastest-growing occupations now call for education beyond high school” the US department of education stated. College graduates earn around $570,000 more than a normal high school graduate during a lifetime, and they have much lower unemployment rates (Editors of ProCon.org). Young adults who attend college set themselves up for success in the future. Although it can be done without going to college, it is much simpler to get a higher education. It would take lots of work getting an education, but in the long run it would put students in a better situation. In the article “Why Should College Be Free?” the author writes, “Without the weight of student loan debt, more college graduates might buy houses rather than renting apartments. They might buy cars, spend more on healthy food, and take additional vacations. In essence, they could contribute more to the economy and it can have a wealth of benefits for the entire country including lower healthcare costs” (College Raptor Staff). This quote references the opposing side of the free tuition argument. If education became no cost, the value and quality of that education would decrease significantly. People would take it as a joke, and not be serious about the education but waste a spot for someone who was actually interested in that class.
