A lot of people are for the legalization of marijuana, whether they enjoy using the plant themselves, or believe that it isn’t as harmful as it is made out to be. An advocate for marijuana, Bill Hicks, said, “Why is marijuana against the law? It grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn’t the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit. . . unnatural?” (Hicks) Marijuana has been used by the people on this planet for thousands of years with some of the earliest recorded uses dating back to 500 B.C. It was used mostly for medicine, religious purposes, and in some cases, as a sign of peace. In 1937, however, it was made illegal as it was deemed unsafe, and since then most of the people have wanted a reform. Marijuana deserves to be legal …show more content…

Marijuana, unlike tobacco and and alcohol will not account for any deaths in America if used properly and will offer a safe way for people to free their minds and relax, making this a pretty obvious reason as to why marijuana should be legalized.
Along with the fact that marijuana is much safer than some legal substances, marijuana also has a lot of medical benefits and has the added benefit of also being safer than most pharmaceuticals. Some of the painkillers you can find on the market include, oxycodone, methadone, and hydrocodone. These prescription painkillers can cause a lot of issues including severe dependence/addiction, respiratory issues, and death. On the other hand, marijuana can be used to treat the same levels of pain as these prescriptions, without the negative side effects and chance for severe addiction that you find with painkillers. Some of the more serious illnesses that marijuana can help to alleviate include cancer, HIV, parkinson's disease, and seizures of any kind.
