Each year, more than 100 million animals are killed or experimented on by scientists. Experimenting on animals not only affects the animal, but humans as well. While testing is important for finding cures for many different diseases, the amount of living organisms killed during experiments is avoidable. Animal testing is a world-wide issue, and serious measures must be placed by removing all animals from a laboratory setting and banning testing throughout the United States. Using animals to test the safety of products is used throughout the whole world. They request abolishment of the use of animals in labs or treatment that is fair to the animals. Some countries including the European Union, India, and Israel have banned animal testing but the United States is not one to join them. Recently, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) decided that research involving chimpanzees was unnecessary, and came to the decision of banning the use of chimps in labs. Also, a bill proposed in 2016 aimed to reduce the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other chemical firms use of animals to test products (Brulliard 3). Next, the Animal Welfare Act sets standards for housing, transportation, and the handling of animals. The only problem with this act is that it allows an animal to be poisoned, shocked, burned, starved, restrained, brain damaged, and addicted to drugs. Scientists have the right to perform any experiment they want no matter how painful it is and no pain killers are required. Scientists and inventors can develop technology that can replace the use of animals in research labs. The Animal Cruelty Act also needs to be changed because it allows scientists to perform any type of medical procedure no matter how painful or controversial it will be. Also, there needs to be a national law that prohibits anybody from performing a medical surgery in which the animal is destined to be euthanised afterwards. Surprisingly, humans can make a difference too. By informing other people about animal testing, more people will gain the knowledge about what actually happens, persuading them to join the fight to end animal
