There’s an element of second-hand embarrassment felt while walking to a job provided by the cosmetics empire and you notice the streets filled with people herding together like the atrocities they are protesting for: animals. These protesters, wearing makeup on their own, in order to not be mistaken for the ugly testing animal themselves, have allowed for the empire to grow into the untouchable powerhouse it is today, but it is suddenly not ok to get rid of these monsters whose only purpose is to take up space. The protests that are arguing for animals to have basic human rights are not interfering with the animal testing, but with the simple basic human rights of being able to get to one place to another. Think about it: have you ever been in a situation where you are stuck behind someone going slowly and there are other people surrounding you, making it impossible to get around that one slow person?
Take a moment and think about your daily routine. You wash your hair with your Head & Shoulders shampoo, wash your body with your Dove soap, do your makeup with your favorite MAC or Maybelline products, and spray some Marc Jacob’s perfume and then you are ready to go, right? Well, did you ever consider how these products are tested before being sold? It is said that, “Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in US labs every year” (11 Facts About Animal Testing). A number of companies around the United States use animal testing as a method to examine the safeness of a product.
Animal testing is nothing new or unheard of. It’s been a major issue within many countries for several years, in fact it started with the Feinstein-Collins bill in which allowed for the deaths of many animals due to the harsh chemicals in cosmetic products. This bill requires the testing of products before the production and distribution to the public. The companies were unable to test on humans due to the risk of chemical malfunctions, so large corporations turned to small animal like rats, mice and rabbits to be their test subjects. This inhumane act was not taken well by the public, and laws soon changed to fight for animal rights in several countries.

Animal testing can be dated back to the ancient times of Greeks and Romans when humans first wanted to start to learn new items. The ancient physicians would dissect many types of animals with merely the pure interest to obtain a better understanding of how the animal’s body functions. However even at this time, one physician declared that he would rather not use a monkey too, “avoid seeing the unpleasant expression of an ape” but he would rather use a pig(Shanks 9). The ethics of animal testing has consistently been questioned from the dawn of its creation and probably always will until they find an explanation. Humans do not want to think that animals are on the same general makeup as we are but they are and there is no denying it.
What is animal testing? Does it help manage the chemicals that go into the things we consume? What really goes on in those laboratories? Animals used in laboratories are deliberately harmed, not for their own good, and are usually killed at the end of the experiment. Over the years animals were used to be tested on medical treatments, products for human uses, health care, and etc. The practice of researching on living animals has started since 500 BC. Opponents of this act say that it is cruel to experiment on animals, there are other methods available to replace the cruel act of experimenting on living animals, and that the human bodies and animal’s bodies are totally two different features and the research often yields irrelevant results. The federal Animal Welfare or AWA passed the animal testing act in 1966 and amended in 1970, 1976, and 1985.
