Arguments Against Legalizing Marijuana

Marijuana is a highly used drug all over the world for both recreational and medicinal use. It comes from the “cannabis” plant and can be used in foods or smoked. Depending on how potent the strain is, the effects can be short-term and long term. The chosen topic that I’m opposing is The Legalization of Medical Marijuana. I’m opposing the legalization of marijuana for these reason: • Legalizing marijuana would fly in the face of our decades-long effort to discourage smoking and drug use to the children. • The number of deaths and injuries from impaired driving will increase if marijuana is legalized as more people will drive while under the influence of the drug. • Marijuana is among the top four drugs for which people sought substance abuse treatment, along with …show more content…

For children and young people, ‘legal’ equates to ‘safe’. We really don’t want that. Every year in the month of October is the annually Red Ribbon Week which is a campaign to raise awareness on alcohol, Tabaco, other drugs, and violence. During this week the schools perform activities and educate the children on why it’s bad for you. Legalizing marijuana will totally send mix messages to the children and imply to them since its legal its ok. So take a minute to think about the kids of tomorrow living in a world that marijuana is legal. Like most other drugs marijuana affects the parts of the brain that allow us to make plans, solve problems, and make decisions. As a kid/teen our brain is still developing and this will mess with their ability to learn and move forward with their education. Smoking marijuana can cause long-lasting changes in the brain's reward system and critical brain regions involved in learning and memory. Teens who start smoking marijuana risk becoming addicted.
