National media attention is on the Presidential election coming up on November 8th, but besides that there is a lot of state propositions that will impact our state. One major proposition is the state of California is Prop 64 which if it is passed it will legalize the recreational sale and consumption of marijuana. Although they have rules and regulations in place in case the proposition happens to pass, it is only the beginning of a much bigger problem for the state of California. In November I will be voting No on Prop 64 because I believe it will do more harm than good for the state of California. Within the last ten to fifteen years marijuana has been looked at less and less as a taboo or in a negative light. This is due to medical research finding benefits for the use of marijuana and also the pop culture world like music, television, and movies have put marijuana in this light that makes it “cool” if you smoke marijuana. Kids will think well if my favorite football player or my favorite music artist is doing it then it must be ok and not bad for me at all. In turn kids should be educated that studies show that until the brain matures at 25, pot could affect brain development, structurally and functionally. What needs to be shown as well that with the passing of Prop 64 the marijuana industry will only become a problem like the tobacco industry has become in this country. Like the tobacco industry the marijuana industry can become a commercial powerhouse with the legalization of marijuana. Other states that has legalized the drug for recreational sale and use, only show the financial success that they have achieved but will fail to give you negative results.
