Edgar Degas said “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see”. And with this application for a place on the BA in Fine Art course at your university, I begin my journey to help other see through my art and the art I will help them create. My ambitions for this course are to refine my skills, enhance my knowledge of practices past and present and to define my artistic voice.
I am a practicing visual artist with a primary medium of painting. I have been interested in the making and studying of fine art since I discovered painting during primary school. I began to practically engage with painting as an extra curricula activity during these year, and was fortunate to continue with the subject during secondary school. I was raised in a family with strong religious and traditional cultural values and this set the foundations for the art I now create. During the time I spent at Nkumba, we learnt about a number of famous international artists such as Pablo Picasso, Leonardo Da Vinci, Vincent Van Gough, Michelangelo and Andy Warhol. But our study of them was mainly to observe and understand the basis of their technique and individual practices, as so we can imitate them for success in our setting. Individually as students, we were not taught about how to develop our own artistic personalities and voices. We were also not taught the other essential skills needed to make art a career such as, budgeting, critiquing, marketing or exhibition skills. I now desire to learn these skills amongst other, which I have witness in successful Ugandan fine artists such as Eria Nsubuga Sane, Maria Naita, Paul Ndema and Wasswa Donald.
