Arts in Education Having the arts involved in education is very beneficial to children. The arts improve personal motivations. The arts improve developmental skills. The arts even improve social aspects of schooling. On top of all of that, the arts really help with academics within young children. Yes, they can be time consuming and sometimes pricey, but they are a huge benefit in children’s lives to help them be more successful. Teaching the arts, such as music, art, drama, etc., to students is beneficial to all grades from Pre-K to high school and beyond. Music education has many benefits to all people, such as improved memory and coordination, it helps kids stay engaged in school, they learn about teamwork, and many more (“20 Important”, 2014). All of this because of learning about music or being involved with music. Along with mental benefits, music education has physical benefits. Music is often used as therapy for many different problems. Some of the problems music is used for therapy are Alzheimers, dementia, dyslexia, autism, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, also known as ADHD. Socially, a lot of people have some sort of problem, whether that be social anxiety or something worse. Getting involved with music, whether its an orchestra, marching band, choir, small ensemble, or just a small garage rock band, helps people develop the skills for working with others and embraces teamwork. Working with others in music engages in positive activities which in turn allows kids to be more resilient to negative influences that they will encounter in their lives and also increases the likelihood that they will make more positive life choices throughout their lives (“The Importance”, 2014). The arts create a supportive environment that promotes constructive criticism along with acceptance. It promotes students to take risks. Students who are involved in music have a higher tendency to volunteer for things. In a study conducted by Columbia University it is found that students involved in the arts are more cooperative with teachers and peers, as well as more self confident and more able to express their ideas and beliefs. Along with these findings, it is found that there is less aggressive and anti-social behavior expressed by the students.
