Religious refers to beliefs, behaviors, practices, and feeling in or the worship of god, gods, or supernatural where they worship and follow the rules of a religion. Spirituality means different things to different people. Some people believe that through private prayer, yoga, and even meditation will get them in touch with their spiritual side. Some people believe that being spiritual is being a part of organized religion. To some people spirituality is about feeling a sense of purpose and meaning in life and becoming one with God, nature, or the universe. Spirituality is an expression, feelings, and meaning in someone’s life. This will help the counselor determine if the client’s religious background and spirituality will benefit them in treatment planning. In level one assessments counselors will obtain information through intake questionnaires or counseling interviews. Sometimes information that is needed can happen through the natural development of counseling. It can be beneficial for some clients to be given handouts with spiritual thoughts and quotes from religious and spiritual backgrounds. This will help clients explore and determine what beliefs and values they may have. The client may begin to explore why a certain thought or quote meant something to them. This will help the counselor explore the client’s beliefs without asking too many questions. The level two assessments are conducted when the counselor believes that a client’s religious background and spirituality will benefit them.
