A. Sodium is an important ingredient it is used to preserve food and enhance food flavors. It also can be used to prevent pathogens. But if you consume an excessive amount it can have dangerous health effects (Erasmus, 1993).
1. According to the American Heart Association, your sodium intake should be less than 1,500 mg each day (About Sodium, 2017).
a) An overdose of sodium might have some symptoms of a strong feeling of thirst, loss of appetite, nausea, and weakness. People who are sensitive to sodium might more severe symptoms that may include muscle twitching, confusion, and bleeding around the brain. The most severe effects would be an increase in blood pressure or a possible risk of heart disease.
b) The McDonald's menu offer a Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Bagel has a high sodium content of 1260 mg (McDonald’s Nutrition Calculator, 2017). This is almost the “per day” limit amount of sodium intake that the American Heart Association recommends, in one breakfast item (About Sodium, 2017).
