For a company to achieve self-sustainability, numerous factors have to be taken into account; the company has to be self-sufficient financially, acquire the expertise and management skills essential to educate and lead its workforce to be efficient and effective, and possess the marketing resources necessary to enable it to depict its competitive advantage (in what ways it is superior to its competitors and substitutes) to customers and potential investors alike. Though there are additional determinants implicated in the path to self-sustainability, finance, human capital, and marketing have been the most difficult for companies to succeed in. These three factors are interconnected, like most departments in a company; thus, when a company is lacking in one of the three, the other two are likely to suffer also. Without strong financial resources, there would be inadequate funds available to obtain the expertise necessary to run an organization and the marketing resources needed to attract new customers while retaining the old.
