Depression since before the depression: Everyone has days where they feel blah, down, or sad. Typically, these feelings go away after a day or two, mostly if things change for the positive. Depression was first separated from schizophrenia in 1895 by the German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin. Depression has been linked to imbalances in the brain with regard to the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Some believe the rise in some can be due to cultural expectations (holidays for example we are told by the culture we should be happy but we are not), social isolation (we spend too much time in a cocoon with social media and texting and video games or other technologies we don’t have as much social connection. Major depression is the psychiatric diagnosis most commonly linked with suicide, with about 20 times the risk found in the general population. In 45 years worldwide suicide rates have increased by 60%, there are 4 male suicides for every 1 female suicide however, 3 times more females attempted suicide. 1 million die worldwide by depression related suicide that’s 3000 deaths a day or 1 death every 40 seconds look at it this way for every 3 min YouTube video you finish watching 4 people have died. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in kid’s ages 15-24 years old and the 10-14 year old suicide rate has double in the last 20 years. By 2020 depression will be the second most common health problem and the second largest killer besides heart
