Learning Theories in Instructional Planning Becoming knowledgeable on learning theories is important for educators to deliver instruction. Learning theories show us how learning takes place inside of our minds. Educators can then determine how to instruct students most effectively. The Springboard Curriculum, created by the College Board, provides educators in grades six through twelve with instructional tools and strategies to help improve students' critical thinking, reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. This theory can be applied to the ELA Springboard curriculum to facilitate effective learning when we create opportunities for the students to participate actively in their learning. When students are assigned a reading within the ELA Springboard curriculum, strategies should be given to help them comprehend and remember key concepts. One effective strategy would be the metacognitive strategies, such as previewing the text before reading, making predictions on what they will learn, using checks for understanding while reading, and using metacognitive markers. The most common strategy/scaffold associated with cognitive learning theory would be talking to the text/thinking out loud. This strategy invites students to express their thoughts as they read by taking notes in margins, making comments, underlying and highlighting words, or making predictions (Schoenbach et al., 2016). Springboard promotes cognitivism by emphasizing the role of mental processes. Connectivism Springboard Instructional Planning Connectivism was first introduced by George Siemens and Stephan Downes. It emphasizes the role that technology plays in the learning process. Today, students are surrounded by technology, and the ELA Springboard Curriculum provides an online platform so teachers can easily add more digital learning opportunities for students to become eLearning professionals. Students can learn to access resources and information online using digital libraries or research to explore more topics. The online discussion forums that Google Classroom offers can help less outspoken students collaborate with their classmates or ask questions. For middle school and older students, Gamification is a valuable strategy that reinforces concepts of the ELA Springboard curriculum by making learning more
