An epic is a long narrative poem that celebrates a hero’s deeds. All epics have an epic hero. Every epic hero has noble and heroic characteristics. The epic poem Beowulf is a perfect example of what an epic hero is. In the poem, Beowulf did many great things, although he had a few characteristics that an epic hero shouldn’t have. Beowulf showed nobility, bravery, and many more characteristics of an epic hero. In the movie version of Beowulf he wasn’t as great of a person like he was in the poem/book. In the movie he displayed characteristics that no epic hero should ever have. There were many differences between the book and the movie version of Beowulf. Beowulf was a noble, heroic warrior in the book; however, he was portrayed as a liar in the movie. In the book Beowulf defeats Grendel after he had attacked Herot for twelve winters. Grendel’s mother came and attacked to avenge her only child’s death. Beowulf also defeated Grendel’s mother in the book, whereas in the movie he lied about killing her. In the movie, after Grendel’s mother attacked Herot, Beowulf went into her lair, but he didn’t do what he had gone to do. Instead of killing her like he had planned, Beowulf was seduced by her, considering that she wasn’t a hideous monster like Grendel, her seduction
