In an attempt to persuade and gain voters for Bernie Sanders in the November 2016 election, Bernie’s campaign created a TV advertisement using different tactics. Bernie is running for the Democratic party in the election. By connecting to different audiences and stating his political positions, Bernie builds himself up by using ethos and pathos. The first is that Bernie is trying to reach as many voters as possible, young and old, by making claims that appeal to both sides. Bernie Sander uses pathos to try to reach an audience of immigrants and the children of immigrants. An addition to the college statement is later in the video he indicates that he is fighting for tuition-free colleges, which many people are in support of. This is most likely directed mostly towards younger voters who are in college and for a lot of them, it will be their first time voting so, of course, he wants that crowd. He wants this crowd of young voters because they will vote for him in later elections also, if they see what he’s trying to do now. It could also be towards those supporting college kids, being that they feel the impact of the expenses of college too. The next expression made is that while his time in Congress, he stood up for working families. With this statement alone, he is able to reach a huge majority of the population, especially those who will make their way to the voting poll. Almost all families have to work at some point during their lifetime to support themselves or others. This tactic involved him using political ethos. He used this presupposition as being named “America’s best mayor” by U.S. News to make it appear as if he helped and did so much the people in his city declared him as that. Mentioning his time in congress is also able to give him credibility by showing he has been around the president/s, has seen what they must do, and has been involved in nationwide political situations that involve decision making. By building himself up from being a citizen to the mayor of a city to being in Congress, I believe it shows he can take on another step as being president.
