Bill Gates founded Microsoft, a software company established in 1975. He quickly became one of the richest men in the world, for he was an instant millionaire at the age of just 31. Time went on, Gates made more money, then he married, stepping down from CEO of Microsoft in 2000 to work with his wife on giving their wealth back to the world. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation supports families around the world, giving them the health and education they need. Bill has given a lot of his wealth back to the world, because he and his wife support education in families all over the world by donating money to help students get into college, and they donate money to scientists to help find drugs and treatments for many diseases. With his strive for excellence and competitive nature, Bill dominated at board games like “Monopoly” and “Risk” (Biography, 2017). Almost every student at Lakeside School knew who Bill Gates was, he was considered the brightest student at Lakeside School (Wallace 18). Bill and his friend he met in Lakeside made a program called “traf-o-data” that monitored traffic in Seattle. Bill ended up enrolling into Harvard to study law, but ended up in the computer lab more often. Paul told Bill about MITS, a company with a micro-computer kit, and how they needed a software to run it. Bill dropped out of Harvard to work for MITS with Paul. They designed a software that worked perfectly with the micro-computers, forming Bill and Paul’s partnership called “Micro-soft”, a combination of micro-computer and software. Long story short, Microsoft became the most popular software company in the world, and Bill Gates was the CEO making billions of dollars. Microsoft also worked with Apple, developing software for Macintoshes, Apple computers. Bill Gates married a 23 year-old product manager named Melinda when he was 32. These all describe Bill Gates. Bill Gates was the CEO of Microsoft, but stepped down in 2000 to help his wife with their foundation. Then, in 2008, Bill Gates fully retired to spend full time with his family and the foundation. Melinda enjoys working with Bill on the foundation, she described how she found it exciting when Bill put his mind and heart into these worldwide problems (B. Gates, TED Talk, April 2, 2014). When Bill and Melinda first questioned what problem to help support in any way possible, they just looked at what was the biggest inequity around the globe, which was health and education. Health was an unfair situation where in some parts of the world, millions of children are dying before the age of five (B. Gates, TED Talk, April 2, 2014). Education is unfair because some families do not have the money to send their kids to school, and to college. So they are not only not getting the education they deserve, they are also lacking a sense of freedom. This is because if they cannot get their education, it is harder for them to get a job, which makes it tough later on in life when people have children and cannot support them with a job. This is the reason Bill and Melinda Gates chose to fund health and education, for people to experience the world as it is and have good health, a good education, and a sense of freedom.
