I – Introduction In 1993, Lois Lowry wrote the book, The Giver, which is a young adult fiction and utopian and dystopian fiction novel. By just holding the book in my hands, I see that on the cover is an illustration of an older gentleman and some tree branches and grass. These images do not seem to give much away prior to even opening the book. Prior to reading any aspect the book, I flipped through the book, looking for chapter titles, pictures, or even a table of contents. I found none of the above. Based off of the title, The Giver, and not reading anything about the book, I am making the assumption that the novel is about someone who gives something to someone and it makes a difference in his or her life. I found that The Giver is the winner of the John Newberry Award in 1994. The book is also ranked a 4.1 out of 5. Based off of those facts, I decided to read the back of the book, which did not seem to give too much away. The back of the book told me that the main characters name is Jonas, who lives in a community where everything is determined and decided for its members. No one gets to make any decisions for themselves. Jonas is eventually assigned his predetermined life assignment, causing him to follow in the footsteps of the mysterious man known as The Giver.
