Jonas In Lois Lowry's The Giver

In Lois Lowry’s outstanding novel The Giver, Jonas was chosen to be the next receiver

and his life was changed drastically. In the ceremony of the 12’s, Jonas anxiously awaited for his

name to be called. He never hears it. The Chief elder made a mistake. Jonas starts out in the

book as a child who doesn’t know what he is good at in the community. He has always been the

one to follow the rules and go to school he is a very smart kid who really doesn’t know how

smart he is. He shares his dreams and feelings with his parents and sister every night. Jonas has

a lot of maturing to do be he also is still a kid.

In the middle of the story the 12’s are chosen for what job they will be doing. Jonas got

He was chosen as the receiver the most important job in the

community you have to go through the pain of remembering all the memories. After Jonas

starts going to meetings with the giver he starts to act different. He stops apologizing, starts to

lie, and stops taking his medication for his dreams. I think he is staring to mature more because

he is learning the truth about his community.

Towards the end of the book is when Jonas starts to get a little crazy because he wants

to leave the community. Jonas goes to another meeting with the giver and he shows him what

release really means. Jonas then finds out his father actually kills people when he talks about

releasing people. Jonas tells the giver he wants to leave the community because he doesn’t

want to deal with all the memories and wants to get Gabe as far away from the community as

possible. The Giver then helps Jonas get out. Jonas sneaks out with Gabe and goes down the

river it’s a very ruff travel to get over the mountains but he makes it with Gabe and they pass

the boundary of memory they know they made it because they heard
