After her father died, her mother became so depressed that she stopped caring, which forced Katniss to gather food from hunting. She had little interest in boys before the games, and focused on supporting her family, but during the games she develops feelings for Peeta, and uncovers feelings for Gale, but still romance is not a main issue for her. Throughout the story she keeps her sense of identity and integrity. Peeta Mellark is the male tribute from District twelve. Throughout the story we see his strong love for Katniss, giving her bread, fighting Cato to save her, and almost killing himself with her. He is a very thoughtful, and kind boy. He does kind things without a motive, and just wants to be nice. He is also very artistic, and we see that when he uses the skills he learned decorating cakes at the bakery, to camouflage himself. Haymitch Abernathy is the only surviving winner of the Games from District Twelve. He is the mentor and coach to Katniss and Peeta for the games. He is inebriated for a large percent of the book, however he is able to create and execute intricate plans to help Katniss and Peeta win.
