Athletics and Academics College sports have swept the nation in the past couple years. There has become this push for students to not only go to school, maintain a high GPA, but also to be involved with a least 1 sport full time. In high school, it is pushed to be a three sport athlete, and to want to continue your career into college. The mental and physical needs that are forced to be met while being a student athlete, is rigorous. It has been emphasized that a student athlete, and everyone in the athletic community know it is student first then athlete. Academics the author Bryan Flynn starts out and seems to have a neutral stand. He tells how professors get paid significantly less than that of college coaches, however as his essay rears towards the end, you tell the stand point of the author. He does not empathize with the professors, or the other side of the argument, as much as he should of in order to make it a more persuasive essay. Instead he tells about all of the revenue college athletics make for the college, unlike that of the academics. “Overall, though, experts admit that successful sports teams lead to increased enrollment and donations.”(Flynn 351) In order to connect with the reader, and help them better understand why coaches make so much more money than that of professors, Flynn uses the appeal of logos, which is more of a rational appeal to the audience. Newhouse uses a persuasive and argumentative tone in his writing, and it is evident he is passionate about this topic. “ ‘Athletes are successful students’, Simons emphasized, ‘ They know how to work hard, how to deal with failure, how to manage their time. Being an athlete takes so much determination and motivation.
