Throughout researching the topic of college athletes being paid, I came across authors like Laura Pappano, Joe Posnanski, and Michael Rosenberg. Laura Pappano and Jose Posnanski’s argument discusses that college athletes should not be paid while Michael Rosenberg expresses the idea that the stars of these college sports should.College athletes may attend college on a scholarship, but I disagree with the arguments presented by Pappano and Posnanski. I agree with Rosenberg and believe that college athletes should be paid. A quote from the article presented that I can relatively say I disagree with is when Posnanski states, “Big-time athletes do get paid. They get free college tuition.” Although ‘big-time’ athletes get a free college tuition, they have absolutely no time to go out and get a job, and work for the money they will need once out of college. College athletes spend their time being in college and when they aren’t doing that they’re going to practice and games to fulfill the ‘athlete’ section of that title. These college athletes only have their free tuition because of their abilities to play sports well. Once out of college these athletes will not have the money to support themselves since they lacked the time while at practice. Who are we kidding? As presented, “the chances of going from college to pro were less than 2 percent. The NCAA found that 11.6 percent of college baseball players play in the Major Leagues, though 0.6 percent of high school players ultimately get that far.” As I was discussing earlier, these student athletes are left with no money because the likelihood is that they will not go pro and make $5.15 million a year, instead they will spend their first few years after college working to try and make money to support themselves because they were not economically prepared. There is no free tuition for life. I believe that college athletes practice and play as if it is their job to do so, shouldn’t they be paid for
