The opportunity to be a CAL tutor in Mr. Gort’s sixth grade classroom has been an incredible learning experience so far this year. I have not only learned a lot about teaching and teaching styles, but about myself as well. Looking back on this past semester in the classroom there areas that I’ve excelled at and others I can work on improving.
A few of my strengths as a tutor are being able to relate to the kids, able to be enthusiastic about new material, the desire to challenge and push them to be the their best, and my punctuality everyday. For the time I am at Bauerwood for CAL, I work along-side Mr. Gort and assist him in teaching the kids math. Math has usually been some-what enjoyable for me, so every time we start a new unit. Weather it happens to be multiplying and dividing decimals or algebra, I am able to get excited over the next topic. I have not missed a day of CAL tutoring and everyday I have arrived to the elementary school at about 9:10 am with my personal stuff set aside and with a smile on my face; and everyday I leave around 9:55 am with an even bigger smile because of these kids.

My weaknesses as a tutor include lack of confidence in front of the entire class, feeling lost and not knowing where to start lessons, a sometimes quiet, weak voice and inadequate penmanship and although eager and willing to jump at any opportunity Mr. Gort is willing to offer, I am also hesitant and fearful. I intend on working hard in each of these areas by asking to work with more small groups and getting to know each kid better so hopefully I become more comfortable in front of the class, work on my “teacher’s voice” and practice my
