Why I Volunteer At Shamrock Springs Elementary Class

Starting about the third week of the trimester, I have been volunteering at Shamrock Springs Elementary 2-3 days of the school week. I volunteer from 1:15- 3:45 pm for a total of 2.5 hour per visit. I served all of my 40+ hours at the elementary school. When volunteering at the school, I helped in a 2nd grade classroom by mentoring, helping, and playing with the students. I have done a variety of things to serve the students including one on one tutoring, accessing individuals, and reading to the class. I really liked how in this class we were able to go out and use information and skills discussed in class right away. The three of us worked collaboratively in order to best educate and benefit the students. One of the biggest challenges we faces was handling and taking care of a particular student in the class who has Autism. It takes a lot of energy to keep this student productive and in line, so we were continuously working together to help this student’s education. Also because I tutored a few of the students, I would work with the teacher to get certain materials for the students and discuss the student’s progress. I loved being able to share my knowledge and understanding to others and spending time getting to know the kids. The kids in the class have really grown on me, and I plan to continue visiting them throughout the year. As cheesy as it sounds, I have also learned to be more compassionate and loving in my life. No matter what kind of day I was having, as soon as I walked into the classroom these kids would brighten up my day. I have had a really happy trimester, and I feel like I have to give some credit of that to my volunteering experiences. I have feel like I have learned a lot from taking this class, and most of what I have learned was from real life experiences. This class made me value academic extracurricular activities more and learning by emerging yourself in that subject. I learned that is way more beneficial for me to experience something first hand than learning about it from a class lecture. I understand how lucky I am to have such a quality education, and I can’t wait to use my education to serve my future community and those who are less
