Carl Jung Carl Jung was both an incredibly prominent and important psychological figure of the 20th century. His relationship and influence with Sigmund Freud developed both of the figures ideas, helping give the roots to modern psychoanalysis. In his early works he would develop upon the idea of the collective unconscious, persona, and development. From the start of his career at the turn of the century all the way until his death in 1961 he continued his work. Today people cite his work in many fields and cases of psychoanalysis. The most widely accepted of his works would start with the idea of the persona. The persona is defined as a consciously created identity of an individual through socialization and experience (Jacobi 1977). Jung chose this term as in Latin it refers to both personality and masks worn by Roman actors. The idea of a persona is that it is “a mask for the collective psyche” (Jung 1916). Although the theories of these personalities existed before Jung developed his theories and scientific opinions, he felt they did not quite explore the subject properly. With that he published his book Psychological types in 1921 about the characteristics of introversion and extroversion. He took vocabulary and purely basic ideas created by Sigmund Freud and we see this as he depends on Freud’s term for personal energy called libido. He theorized that extraverts have an outward flow of libido, focusing on the outside world, events and relationships. In opposition, the introvert has an inward flow of energy focusing on concentration, reflection, and imaginative process. Although he was not the last psychologist to study these personalities, his ideas built a stronger foundation for psychoanalysis. His research on psychoanalysis also led him to stunning discoveries in
