In the essay “Agonism in the Academy” by Deborah Tannen, readers get the feeling that the author is writing to students and educators. This led to Tannen’s essay getting published in The Chronicle of Higher Education. As readers, we know that students and educators are who the author is writing to because Deborah Tannen’s main argument is to explain that there are better ways of learning. And one way she plans to solve agnostic learning, or to improve it, is to have students and educators explore new ways of learning like having an open discussion because a debate will just lead to another argument and won’t solve anything.

Occasion: Marc Sternberg is addressing this topic because of the mayor’s recent decision to employ bad teachers. This is revealed in the beginning of the article. He is frustrated because he is a former principal and knows the effect of an exceptional teacher on the students.

Prior to becoming the secretary of education, Betsy was known as a business woman, a philanthropist, a politician, and an activist. Nowhere in that sentence did I mention a teacher of public schools, and therefore Betsy DeVos is not fit for the title of secretary of education. She does not qualify because she has no experience in public education system, investment in low education systems, and no knowledge about the Individual with Disabilities Education Act.

This would keep teachers from leaving for surrounding states because of pay. They would be able to attract more qualified individuals into teaching because they will receive a better salary than they would have otherwise. This policy would be a taxation policy because it is increasing taxes to increase the pay of teachers in public schools.

In today’s society, teachers are undervalued and underappreciated for the huge part that they play in a child, teenager, and adult’s life. Teachers should be paid more because they contribute more to the future of the world than any other career, help students psychologically and financially, and most students in a survey chose that teachers need to be paid more than their annual salary. Teachers contribute more to the future of the world than any other career. They teach students social and intellectual skills needed to be an effective member of society.
