Let’s just get straight to the point. I would like to know when Newport is going to take bullying, harassment and racial discrimination of its black students seriously. For several years’ instances of racial profiling, harassment and bullying towards African American students have been repeatedly reported to the administration of Tyee Middle School and Newport High School. It has also been reported at the District level by me personally. Children of color attend school in an extremely hostile environment and Tyee, Newport and the District have done virtually nothing to ensure these children are afforded their right to an education.

I would like to see the school board deal with the issue of smaller class sizes. A smaller class provides for a more personal approach to each student’s learning. Also, students within the classroom can develop a closer connection, and the amount of disruption in the classroom will decrease, as the teacher is able to control a smaller group. I have experienced some of this last year, as I was placed in an elective class that was large in size. In there, multiple students often disrupted the class on a daily basis, and several students did not focus.

It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us.” The issue of student expression in schools has been a topic that has been highly discussed. Even though students do have free speech rights, school administrators still have the ability to restrict student expression to help maintain discipline and prevent the school environment from being disrupted. Student expression in schools should be restricted because of students beliefs, their clothing, and also their speech.
