In Chapter 7, we learned that if power and jobs are shared in small groups, rather than one person holding all of the power and responsibility, leadership can be shared, decisions can be made as a team, and groups may end up feeling more satisfied. As designated leaders are known from the start, others may emerge and use their power or ability to lead the group as well. This being said, it may be each group member’s responsibility to act in ways that will lead the team to success. With each group member having the ability to act as leader, groups members should use behavior that inspires the team to do their best. According to our textbook, the leader will be expected to perform three broad types of functions: administrative duties, discussion coordination, and group development. First, selecting members that are committed to the group is very important. Planning meetings and having all necessary materials ready before hand, will also be expected. Leaders should also keep in touch with other members to make sure that the group’s work is being completed. Second, monitoring meetings so that the group stays on topic will also be expected of the leader. They should also encourage critical thinking so that decisions aren’t made too quickly. Our book also notes that it is important for leaders to evaluate their own and the group’s performance and pay close attention to the group’s communication practices. Third, good leaders develop their members’ own leadership capabilities and skills and act ethically (Galanes & Adams, pg 236, 2013). To promote growth, leaders can encourage members to access the group’s processes and make suggestions. Leaders can also help individuals grow by modeling the behavior they want others to adopt (Galanes & Adams, pg 236, 2013).
