Chapter 9: Communicating in Teams and Organizations
LO 9-3: Choosing the Best Communication Channel Steve Jobs used face-to-face communication regularly with Apple employees. (Lashinsky & Burke, 2011) Face-to-face communication has the best level of media richness compared to other channels. [LO 9-3, pg. 263] Employees are able to communicate verbally and nonverbally at once. This method of communication also reduced the chance of information getting leaked. Steve Jobs was very aware that everyone wanted a piece of the Apple secret. (Lashinsky & Burke, 2011) During the Top 100 meetings they made sure to check all areas of the meeting rooms for recorders and other spyware. (Lashinsky & Burke, 2011) Important announcements were always made face-to-face. (Lashinsky & Burke, 2011) In today’s day in age nothing sent electronically is safe from intruders, which is why face-to-face communication was the best method to use. (Lashinsky & Burke, 2011)

(Lashinsky & Burke, 2011) When initial MobileMe was unable to get the software working up to Steve Jobs’ standards, they were removed from the project and replaced by someone who would fulfill his request. (Lashinsky & Burke, 2011) Expert power was also used by Steve Jobs during his reign as Apple’s CEO. The astounding amount of knowledge that he had gave him huge influential capacity.
