Have you ever asked yourself why childhood obesity is so prevalent in today's society? Or why some of the only food related commercials you ever see are of cartoon characters promoting a sugary cereal? 1 in 3 children in America are obese or overweight due to a variety of factors, including an overuse of online/mainstream medias, lack of physical activity, and an unhealthy diet. Rather than promoting daily exercise and healthy eating habits, television ads promote unhealthy foods to the American youth. Children are targeted by marketers from the moment they open their eyes everyday to the moment they fall asleep at night. The food industry began to self-regulate their junk food ads to youth, but that didn't mean healthy foods were being advertised more. Michelle Obama began a campaign to get healthy foods in school lunches and even used celebrities to make funny and enjoyable commercials about fruits and vegetables. This allows kids to see the bright side of healthy eating and also allows parents to truly think about what they are letting their child eat. She proved that almost all of the problems surrounding obesity come from what is being promoted to our nations youth on tv and in their daily lives. Sure children should get more exercise and eat healthier but you can't expect them to if the only ads they see are people enjoying unhealthy foods. In order to make what has been started even better we must further advocate healthy eating habits and stress that small changes of your diet can lead to big success in the end. Obesity is not a factor that makes up a society, so why should we allow it to loom over ours?
