Lazarou & Kouta (2010) define obesity as “a chronic metabolic disease, considered to be one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease”, and state that hypertension, atherosclerosis and type two diabetes have also been shown to be more likely in people with obesity (p. 641). These adult health problems have now become commonplace amongst children and youth today (Tuckwood, 2012). With obesity being diagnosed at earlier ages, prevention becomes increasingly difficult; personal habits are harder to break, health risks are more serious, and the likelihood of living with obesity in adulthood is significantly higher. Fifty percent of children who are obese will become obese adults (Lazarou & Kouta, 2010).
Childhood Obesity by Karen Luna General Purpose : To inform Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the rising issues of childhood obesity Central Idea: While there are many reasons for childhood obesity rising in the U.S 3 main issues are children eating too much ,excercising too litte and obesity producing diseases in childhood. Introduction I. Take a look around next time you go to the store, the mall or anywhere. What you will find has become the new trend among children. It is starting to become literally a big problem and it is becoming a bigger issue each year.
Being overweight in childhood increases the risk of various health problems such as: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, respiratory problems, orthopedic problems and sleep problems. These risks not only affect them as a child but carry over into their adult life. Cardiovascular disease is usually associated with adults, however as child obesity rates raise so does the incidence of high blood pressure and high cholesterol in children. Type 2 diabetes is also on the rise among children who are obese. Obesity contributes to the growing prevalence of diabetes (~9-13% of Americans), pre-diabetes (16% of adolescents and 30% of US adults) and metabolic syndrome (25-50% of overweight adolescents).
The obesity epidemic in North America has reached new heights. There was a time when obesity only affected adults and rarely children and adolescents, however, that time is now over. In 2007, Statistics Canada found that twenty nine percent of adolescents had unhealthy weights. In recent years more and more children have been diagnosed with obesity related diseases and health issues. Examples of obesity related diseases and health issues include: type two diabetes, kidney failure, stroke, heart attack, and high cholesterol.
Good afternoon Sheri, I know you have asked for me to not lose the run of myself on childhood obesity messaging development. Instead of creating messages, I have taken a step back to understand how we can blend the mindful eating approach with the nutrition related “reasons” for obesity. I understand this is your expertise, and I did this for my own understanding, to make sure I’m on your page with the approach you think will be most effective. To that end, I drafted a short word document that I would like your feedback on.
Thanks for sharing your post. There are a couple of things I want to share my views on. First of them is your thirteen-year old obese son. This is very common in America teenagers currently. “Today, about one in five school-aged children (ages 6-19) has obesity” (CDC.gov).
Informative Briefing Self-Assessment My informative speech discusses childhood obesity and the different aspects of it. I divided my speech into three sections, each one informing my audience about particular facets of childhood obesity. The three parts were made up of the following: how childhood obesity has developed over time (mainly over the past 30 years), what causes childhood obesity, and how childhood obesity affects other parts of the world. From a visual standpoint, I used a Powerpoint to accompany my speech and provide an optical means of communication to my audience.
It is clear that obesity is no longer an emerging crisis but instead it has become an epidemic. There have been several different factors that play into how obesity has grown to become the issue it has but it is hard to place the blame on any one person. It can be argued that the parents of obese children are the ones’ to blame if their children are overweight or obese, but who is not to say that the issue originated from the companies that sell these unhealthy products to the consumers. Calling childhood obesity childhood abuse is drastic term since it is unclear as to who would be held responsible for this national issue. Some countries have taken the stance that the responsibility for childhood obesity falls onto the parents.
TThe word obesity comes from Latin obēsus, from ob- (intensive) + edere to eat (obese, n.d.). However, today we define obesity as the condition of being very fat or overweight (obesity, n.d.). Our everyday life environment is becoming more obesogenic because of its increasing exposure to unhealthy food and bad habits, and research shows that wherever foods high in fat and sugar are readily available and easily accessible, people are more obese (Wilsher, Harrison, Yamoah, Fearne , & Jones, 2016). Furthermore, the vast majority of high on fat and unhealthy food products goes to the fast food industry (Cena, n.d.) However, while the public interest in health and obesity issues is decreasing, the demand in the fast food industry is growing rapidly
It is no secret that obesity is a serious problem in the United Kingdom. Fifty-seven percent of women, and 67 percent of men in the UK are overweight. The obesity rate today is three times higher than it was 30 years ago. Experts are predicting that this trend will continue to grow. There have been many things put in place to reduce the obesity rate.
Hello Pius, While I do agree obesity is a national issue, I don’t agree that buffets are to blame there have always been all you can eat buffets. I would put the blame more on the lack of exercise starting in childhood due to technology and the distraction it is for children, as a child I remember spending all day outside from sun up to sun down I was outside every day I was allowed and wasn’t stuck in school. Now things are much different “AAP has estimated that the average child can spend upwards of 7 hours of TV, internet usage and video games per day! The scary thought is that everything else is taking a back seat including: quality family time, reading, homework, and exercise.
Think about how much fast food you eat in a week. Too much? Research studies show it is very bad for you and your health. You actually do not eat what you think you are, flavorologist create a replicate of what you actually ordered in a lab. Next time you are hungry, think about what you should choose to eat.
In 2014 for the first time more people have died from obesity than starvation. North Shore.org tells us “That over ninety seven million adults in America are obese or overweight.” The weight issue must be coming from somewhere right? When you think about weight gain and where it comes from you usually start thinking about food and, what kind of food you are eating that could cause weight gain. I think it's coming from the fatty sugary processed foods that are being manufactured by big food companies that only care about the money they receive and not the well being of their customers.
