The Childhood of a Criminal

Albert Einstiens was not able to form a complete sentence until he was 5 years old. But due to his parents' persistent education he became the man he is known as today. What factors and consistencies determine the uprising of a criminal in a human? Researching the childhood environment of criminals can help to understand how it may affect their future. People should care so that the human race can prevent this and raise a better generation. The environment a child is raised in can make or break their future.

Children's brains naturally increase the capability to learn. ¨Children’s brains develop in spurts called critical periods. The first occurs around age 2, with a second one occurring during adolescence. At the start of these periods, the number of connections (synapses) between brain cells (neurons) doubles. Two-year-olds have twice as many synapses as adults. Because these connections between brain cells are where learning occurs, twice as many synapses enable the brain to learn faster than at any other time of life. Therefore, children’s experiences in this phase have lasting effects on their development (Why Ages).¨ This matters because we can see that most of the learning in a child's life is focused into the early years of child development. The Child development period is the most influential time on the child's brain and personality. ¨This first critical period of brain development begins around age 2 and concludes around age 7. It provides a prime opportunity to lay the foundation for a holistic education for children. Teenage years of development will set the priorities and most commonly the mental health issues that criminals often are affected by. ¨Ongoing changes in the brain, along with physical, emotional, and social changes, can make teens vulnerable to mental health problems. All the big changes the brain is experiencing may explain why adolescence is a time when many mental disorders—such as schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and eating disorders—can emerge (The teen Brain).¨ This is important because many criminals have a history of mental health issues and we can see that there is a common age for those health issues to begin their effect. Stress is actually important and can be a very good thing for development both physically and mentally. If you learn how to cope with stress properly it will set a strong base for ones future, but acting out in a rage while under stress will lead to a negative future. ¨Because the teen brain is still developing, teens may respond to stress differently than adults, which could lead to stress-related mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. Mindfulness, which is a psychological process of actively paying attention to the present moment, may help teens cope with and reduce stress.
