Christopher Columbus, or Cristoforo Colombo in Italian, was one of the first people to reach the Americas meaning to reach the Indies. He was most likely born in between August 26 and October 31 in 1451 and was a citizen of Genoa. Colombo died on May 20, 1506 in Valladolid, Spain due to crippling arthritis, gout, and malaria. Columbus's last words were “Father, into Thy hands I commit my spirit.” Columbus had sadly been given a small funeral with people unknowing of what he had truly done. In 1476 Columbus moved to a city called Lisbon. He met and married a woman there named Dona Felipa, who came from a noble family. Columbus also had his first son named Diego. As a child, Christopher wanted to explore the world and spread Christianity. When Columbus was 25 years old, his ship was attacked by pirates and it sank. He recovered and landed in Portugal. His brother, Bartholomew, lived in Portugal and Columbus would spend the next eight years living with him in his map store. Columbo had never gone to school until a grown man. Genoa was a seaport town and he did not want to follow his family into weaving. He saw ships come and go every day and he would talk to sailors and hear what they saw out in the sea. The ships would usually go around the Mediterranean to trade. The sailors talked about faraway places and the huge “monsters” they would see. During Columbus’s voyage his crew would always be frightened and would want to turn back. He would always deny their requests and showed them a fake journal with less miles than original to try not to worry the crew. On September 25, 1492 Pinzon, the captain of the Pinta yelled, “Land!” The crew sobbed and prayed but they woke up the next morning just to realize they were clouds by the horizon. Columbus decided to name the people there Indians. He described them as peaceful and handsome and would make good Christians and servants. Columbus was obsessed with gold and the Indians had gold rings going through their noses so he tried to ask where they found their gold using sign language. The Indians tried to reply back and said there was a king southern of their island who had large amounts of gold. Before leaving the island, which Columbus named San Salvador, the Indians gave them parrots and cotton while the sailors gave them anything that their hands could be laid upon.
