Classroom Management Philosophy

I would like to offer an apology to all of my students that I taught during my first years of teaching. I could have better helped my students learn. I am sorry I let some students down. I did not know how to help all of students effectively. Experience and reflection have brought change to my teaching since 1992. My students have taught me so much over the years.
My first years of teaching were not disasters. My students learned. I had great rapport with most students. I was enthusiastic and hard working. I was organized and had excellent classroom management. I had a great depth of content knowledge. I integrated technology seamlessly into my lessons. It is important to have a physical environment where students may easily move and student-teacher eye contact can be maintained. It is important to have clear and well-practiced procedures to maximize learning time. It is important for students to know the rules of the classroom and that the rules be kept simple and enforced regularly. Effective classroom management will give teachers greater time on learning. In a highly effective teacher’s classroom, classroom management appears to just happen, often without even the direction of the teacher. Not only does this learning strategy address the writing standard, it also serves as a means of learning and evaluating the learning of the science content. According to authors Mayher, Lester, and Pradl (1983), writing serves as an “engaging transaction through which the learner makes her own connections and builds her own meaning.” Writing gives students an opportunity to elaborate on a topic and establish meaningful connections to past learning, both of which help with long term memory and meaningful learning (Ormrod, 2009). Students should be encouraged to write as much as possible and that clarity of ideas and explanations is the utmost goal in the assignment.
