Sea levels are rising. Glaciers are melting. The air is thickening. The future has never looked so bleak. Predictions of fiercer floods, more intense earthquakes and more frequent droughts swarm the media and perhaps our consciences. Climate Change; the most concerning environmental threat is unfolding as we speak. Fellow youth delegates, I am here before you not as an expert, but as a citizen concerned for our future. The notion of climate change is commonly heard, but the destruction that it entails is often underestimated. It poses a serious threat to everything and everyone. It isn’t something that just belongs in the screens of our T.V., nor is it something that will heal itself over time. It is something that demands our immediate attention, and immediate action. It is something that we, the future generation, must change.
There has been great speculation surrounding the realities of climate change, however the debate is now over. In recent historic reports, the UN’s panel on climate change have concluded without equivocation that climate change is occurring on all of our continents and in all of our seas, driving ocean acidification, the destruction of our ice sheets, desertification, hurricanes, and catastrophic heat waves.

We are home to the world’s beloved and diverse Great Barrier Reef, which as a consequence to our own actions, is gradually deteriorating. In fact, recent research has shown that two-thirds of the reef has suffered from extreme coral bleaching caused by record-breaking temperature rises. Given that the Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia’s top tourist destinations, without it not only does it pose a serious threat on our marine life, but will also have serious repercussions towards the economy. It is predicted that by the year 2050, our own lifetimes, the Great Barrier Reef will fall
