College Admissions Essay: How My Mom Changed My Life

I grew up in a two parent household with my older sister. My parents are first generation Born- again Christians. They came to faith when I was in kindergarten and our house always had Christ at the center. My Dad did not graduate from college but works hard for his family the best he can. I get my strong willed and passion from my Dad; once you get him started on something he truly believes in you can see the passion and excitement shine through. My Mom is one of the strongest people I know. She has taught me that even though life throws you curveballs, there is always something to find joy in. This was my first time working in an inner city setting and I absolutely fell in love. This really solidified that I wanted to pursue a career in helping people, especially children. Throughout college I had opportunities to work with children in different contexts. One of the things that I got to do was tutor refugee children. The relationships that I got to build with these children is something that I really treasure. When I graduated college I did not know what I wanted to do specifically with my Psychology degree. This past summer while I was working at Wildwater Kingdom I got to build relationships with some of the high school and young college aged employees. I loved getting to sit and talk with them about the future and simply walk through this tough season of life with them. This started a spark for me to pursue school counseling. After the season was over, I started to volunteer at AmeriCorp with the Ohio Reading Corp program. I was put in Akron Public Schools as a kindergarten through third grade reading tutor. While I love reading with the kids and helping them with their assignments, it is forming the relationships and getting to invest in their lives that makes me look forward to going every single day. This was what really had helped me decide to pursue a career as a school counselor. Whether that be in the elementary setting, having children know they have an advocate, or high school students helping them figure out the next steps; I am excited to pursue a degree in school counseling and seeing where God takes me on this
