There will always be opportunities to do things that interest you, as well demonstrated in this quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, “One thing life has taught me: if you are interested, you never have to look for new interests. They come to you. When you are genuinely interested in one thing, it will always lead to something else.” I was raised on a small farm, in a little town, and have always been very interested in animals and agriculture. Through 4-H, I was introduced to showing animals at the country fair, which gave me a small glimpse of the world that surrounds me. For the longest time I thought the only career route available for me was to become a vet, since they work with animals and I was obsessed with animals. I did not realized until later on in life that there are so many other career options available. If you are passionate about something, you can probably find a job for it. Sure, not all jobs are in high demand, but there are jobs for pretty much anything you can think of doing. It took me a while to figure that out, and then I was not sure what I actually wanted to do with my life. Becoming a vet no longer intrigued me as much as it did when I was little. It was not till I joined my High School’s FFA that I was introduced to animal related careers that I could go into other than just being veterinarian. That is when I realized I could find an occupation that I actually enjoyed doing. I joined the poultry team my first year in FFA, and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. This major will give me more skills to help pursue my dreams and to get a job in a poultry related field. One of the things I care about most is being able to stay close to home. I care very much about my family and my home, and going far away for school is not what I really wanted to do. If I had chosen to go into a different field of study, I might have had to go further away to get the secondary education required to succeed. For this reason, it helps that poultry is the largest agricultural product in Arkansas, with Washington County having the largest single-day inventory, and Benton County having the second largest (thepoultryfederation.com). The need for people in agriculture related jobs are on the rise, meaning that going to school for agriculture related careers is a wise choice. “An average of nearly 60,000 high-skilled ag and related job openings are expected annually in the United States over the next five years, with only about 35,000 grads in food, ag, renewable resources or the environment graduating each year to fill them,” according to cnbc.com.
