Student athletes have the ability to receive academic, sport scholarships, and many other scholarships. Academic scholarships can range from any amount of paid tuition based on the student’s performance throughout high school. Sport scholarships can range from any amount of money toward tuition to free tuition. If an athlete can acquire both and academic and sport scholarship, the school program will lower the sport scholarship to save for another athlete. When athletes graduate college, they have the chance to come out of college debt free. Mark Guarino reported that college football players at Northwestern are receiving a sixty-thousand dollar scholarship for playing football. People claim that the players are the reason people come to the games. Their performance dictates the crowd and the fan base. That since the players are the ones exposing themselves to risks and dangers they should at least receive a compensation. The players do play a big part in the program’s success, but there is a great amount of work done elsewhere. The cost to run and operate a sports program can prove to be a pretty penny. According to Christie Stuebe, in 2015 The University of Mississippi had a fifty-seven million dollar athletics program budget. This cost is to major sports including football, basketball, and baseball. Fifty-seven million dollars may sound promising, but that budget can diminish away quickly. After paying coaches that number can be cut a fourth of the budget. The rest of the money is used toward equipment, renovations, and injuries. With such small budgets teams cannot afford to pay student athletes. Although if player compensations were to go into effect and player were paid, the most successful and highest budgeted team would monopolize college athletics. A top tier SEC Division-1 football such as Alabama has a much greater budget than small school such as Memphis or UAB. Recruiting would become a bidding process that would result in students going to the school just for the money. They put in hours of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears. The players deserve some type of pay, and they receive this through free tuition. The cons heavily outweigh the pros. The idea of a college athlete payroll may sound promising, but there are many negative effects that come with it. Student receive free tuition to compensate for the hard work put in, so that takes care of the money issue. If it would go into effect, many essential and necessary items and equipment would not be funded. Items such as new equipment, renovations, and coaching salary could not be maintain or purchased if payers were paid. Many players would become too focused on his or her performance that his or her grades would decline dramatically, and could possibly be dropped from the class. If that were to happen then the country would have many uneducated and less productive citizens. The thought and idea of a colligate athlete compensation may sound like a beneficial idea for the players, but after considering the cons of it proves to be a bad investment for the student body and the rest of the
