The word ‘College’ derives from the Latin word Collegium, ‘’A college may be a degree-awarding tertiary educational institution, a part of a collegiate university, or an institution offering vocational education.’’ (Robert Short, 2014). However in the English speaking world the word has taken many different types of definitions all somewhat still in a degree of importance and in relation to a ‘group’ of individuals whom share a common factor or aim. More commonly college is associated with higher education within Britain and America, with all of these prestigious representations it’s not surprising how valuable college education is in today’s society. Many may dispute they both are quite different from one another yet students will travel all around the world just too attend these establishments of ‘fine education’. It’s not uncommon for young people to come to these institutes for albeit different reasons all together it can be to expose themselves too different types of people or even different types of experiences maybe even to determine what type of lifestyle they choose to live. College can offer a vast amount of self-realisation and take one on the road to self-discovery which can be the most valuable reward one can take from being in a college environment. However college in the UK may be seen as less significant as in the USA, sometimes confused for the UK’s university education which is more on American college level. Lauren Hudson and Connie Chan from www.hercampus.com compiled a guide of their own experiences in 2013 of American College V British Uni: 15 differences in which they state ‘’ Whilst fees in the U.K. are £9,000 at the most (about $13,800), and for Scottish students they're free, the average American student is shelling out a crazy $22,261 a year for their college education ($43,289 for the average student at a private school).
