Texas community college students face many hardships that jeopardize academic success. One of these hardships is the financial burden of buying textbooks. It is well known that textbooks can be extremely expensive with prices ranging into the hundreds. Many students must purchase several textbooks per semester, and this can really put a strain on a person’s budget. When students are unable to purchase textbooks for classes, academic performance is lowered because students are not able to learn the material properly or study effectively. In addition, a lot of community college students work part time and/or have families to take care of. A person should not have to choose between academic success and a full stomach. To gain publicity we will launch public relations campaigns. Creating a website, holding rallies, distributing insightful newsletters, and contacting news broadcasting stations and newspapers are a few public relations methods we will employ. In seeking support from individuals who share a common interest in the directives of my interest group, I will reach out to community college student bodies and faculty members. My group will contact department heads who are in charge of choosing which textbooks are to be used and we will describe our issue, imploring these individuals to take into consideration textbook prices. I will use my leadership position and connections as president of the Student Government Association at the WCJC Richmond/Ft. Bend Tech Center location to influence others and appeal to other community college organizations about our issue, creating alliances with those who are sympathetic to my goals. Hopefully this will garner support for my interest group and possibly achieve greater membership numbers. In addition, my group will seek out other interest groups who share the same views and form alliances with these
