Everyone at some point in their lives uses explanation and argument. Explaining and arguing is a part of human nature and our natural instincts. Knowing what an explanation and an argument is and being able to tell the difference is a critical thinking skill which is vital to our daily lives. Having the knowledge and ability to make a good explanations or arguments is necessary. To start, the definition of explanation is a statement that makes something clear or a justification given for an action or belief. A part of an explanation is a blend of what is being clarified and the statements which are doing the clarification. Another part is having the informing statements be simple and not suspicious. Starting off with differences, according to Austin Cline (2015), “an explanation is not an argument. An argument is a series of statements designed to support or establish the truth of an idea, and an explanation is a series of statements designed to shed light on some event that is already accepted as a matter of fact.” By comparing both explanation and argument we can see many differences. An explanation is used to clarify a situation and involves causes or consequences. While an argument tries to persuade people of an idea and is made up of fact or evidence. Though, there are differences between them there are also similarities. A similarity is how an explanation and argument are presented is an effect on its effectiveness.
